More important than the theory of the arbitrariness of the sign are its consequences: the Saussurean insight that signs are defined exclusively by negative differences. The word 'blog' can only by defined by other signifiers that it is not. Words have no intrinsic value or (Platonic) form that gives them meaning. This puts language in the realm of the metaphor. But what of synonymity, and metonymy?

This seems to relate to Frege's identity problematic. Both him and Saussure recognize the very real functioning possibility of a=b, and the logical impurity therein.
